Super Why

Super Why, a new show on PBS, is the ONLY thing that Jonah wanted to be for Halloween this year! Super Why has the power to read and with his friends, the Super Readers, they are able to look into books and solve problems. No one had a clue who he was, but he loved his homemade costume (and he REALLY wants to learn how to read now!). And he insisted that I be Princess Presto (with the power to spell, I love to spell, S-P-E-L-L) for Trunk or Treating!

this year has inspired my "home-made" costume side! Looking forward to the years ahead! ( and wanting to begin work on a BROBEE costume ASAP!!)

I would just like to say that I just read your comment Jen, and I was actually Princess Presto, not pesto, which implies that I was green and wearing pine nuts, which I was not. But no pic, so I can't prove it.

OMG My son is OBSESSED with Superwhy and really wants to be him for Halloween this year. How did you make his costume. I have never ever made a costume before. I could be Princess Presto (and make my hubby Alpha Pig lol) so any suggestions on how to do it, please let me know!

I just bought some green sweatpants and the shirt at Walmart, I think they no more than $3 each.

I then used material to cut out the book and used the zigzag stitch to applique it to the shirt. If that sounds like too much trouble, you can buy some iron on webbing in the fabric dept. to attach it to the shirt. You could then use a little fabric paint to keep the ends from fraying. I did not have a stencil, I just sort of eye balled it from a bookmark that we had.

For the mask I sewed a band with some elastic in the back and then cut holes for eyes. It was kind of a pain and I don't think he ended up wearing it much.

For the why-writer my husband attached a question mark to the end of a LED flashlight.

He's worn the shirt and pants all year long, not always together, but just as regular clothes.

My husband has a super why jack-o-lantern stencil that he did, I can post a link when he gets it back up, if you would like! Good luck!
